To our loyal Bondi Babes, you may have noticed that some batches of our Bondi Sands SPF 50+ Lotion Spray Coconut Beach 200ml are not available to shop online or in store. That’s because we’ve made the decision to voluntarily recall these product batch lines following internal testing which identified irregular levels of benzene.

Your safety is our number one priority and every product we develop at Bondi Sands gets thoroughly tested, with all ingredients and finished formulations undergoing strict compliance checks across multiple global bodies, including both TGA and FDA. We continue to conduct checks against our products throughout the manufacturing process to ensure that formulations are safe for use.

In this instance, traces of benzene were detected in three batches of the SPF 50+ Lotion Spray Coconut Beach 200ml product (Batch number 1104263, 1104264 & 1104743). No other batches of SPF 50+ Lotion Spray Coconut Beach 200ml are affected by the recall.

Bondi Sands is working closely with the TGA in Australia to facilitate the recall.

FAQs:

What is benzene?

Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen, a substance that could potentially cause cancer depending on the level and extent of exposure. Benzene is not an ingredient in sunscreens, but rather suspected to be a contaminant from raw materials used from the product manufacture process. The levels of benzene must be below 2 parts per million in sunscreen products that are regulated as listed medicines in Australia. They are calculated to ensure that an individuals’ excess cancer risk would not exceed 1 in 100,000 if that individual used the maximum recommended amount of the product every day of the year for 70 years.

Following testing, Bondi Sands has detected benzene at concentrations 2.2 parts per million in one batch of the SPF 50+ Lotion Spray Coconut Beach 200ml product supplied in Australia. Exposure to this sunscreen and the detected levels of benzene found within this batch would not be expected to cause serious adverse health effects, however to reduce the risk to consumers, Bondi Sands has made the decision to recall the affected product supplied within Australia.

Does this recall impact all Bondi Sands SPF 50+ Lotion Spray Coconut Beach?

No, the only batches that have been affected are:

  • 1104263; Lot Number 2009110050; DOM: 30/03/21, Expiry Date: May 2024
  • 1104264; Lot Number 2011240032; DOM: 31/03/21, Expiry Date: January 2024
  • 1104743; Lot Number 2009110050; DOM: 21/05/21, Expiry Date: March 2024

If you have any of the Bondi Sands SPF 50+ Lotion Spray Coconut Beach products on hand, we recommend checking the Lot Number and Expiry Date to determine if it has been affected.

Do any of your other Bondi Sands SPF products contain this ingredient?

Aside from the above listed batches, none of our other SPF 50+ Lotion Spray Coconut Beach products, nor our other Suncare products, contain this ingredient. Bondi Sands initiated this testing to ensure we continued to supply products that were safe for use, as the safety of our consumers is extremely important to us.

Should I be concerned if I do own/have used this product?

Daily exposure to benzene at the detected levels would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences, however we have voluntarily chosen to recall these products to ensure we comply with safety regulations and continue to protect our customers.

How can I obtain a refund?

For any queries regarding refunds or returns, please contact our customer service team at info@bondisands.com.au

Can I continue to use other batches of this product?

Absolutely! Aside from the above mentioned batches, our remaining SPF 50+ Lotion Spray Coconut Beach products are safe for consumer use and do not contain this ingredient.
