If you've ever struggled with patchy fades, darker areas around joints or even tan clinging where you don't want it, dry skin may be the culprit. Thankfully, the solution is an easy one. It’s all about nailing the hydration!

With a few simple tips and knowing how to prep dry skin before self tanning, a smooth, even glow awaits.

Tanning Tips for Dry Skin

How does dry skin affect your tan?

Dry skin tends to have rougher patches, especially around elbows, knees, ankles and hands. These areas can absorb more product quicker than usual, leading to an unusually deeper colour or uneven results.

That's why hydration is just as important as application. Some extra TLC before tanning can make a world of difference during application, and when skin is well moisturised, self tan glides on more evenly and fades more smoothly.

Preparation is key

In other words, indulge in a pre-tan pamper sesh! Sure, it’s a little time-consuming, but no one ever said no to some extra ‘me time’. So sit back, relax and enjoy the experience.

In the context of tanning, this preparation step is where you remove any dead skin cells to reveal smooth skin underneath, then moisturise that new layer of skin so it’s in tip-top shape for tanning later on.

Start the pampering with a long soak in a nice, warm bath. Not only does this soften your skin, but the bath provides temporary hydration to the skin’s outermost layer. For extra hydration, add some moisturising bath products like a bath bomb or bath milk.

Once you’ve soaked, use anExfoliating Mitt all over your body. Use the black side and massage skin in a vertical direction, applying comfortable pressure. This helps to remove dead skin cells and create a smooth base for a flawless self tan application.

When ready, give your skin a deep dose of hydration with moisturiser. For dry skin, we personally recommend ourSweet Dreams Night Moisturiser. While it’s normally used for the face, you can still apply it on your body. Skin will feel like it’s on Cloud 9 with its nourishing formula enriched with Hyaluronic Acid, Squalane, Wild Hibiscus Flower and Algae – all of which work together to deliver up to 72 hours of deep hydration.

Ideally, the prepping stage is done at least 24 hours before application time. If you’ve left it to the last minute (we’ve all been there!), wait at least one hour before applying your self tan. This gives your moisturiser enough time to absorb properly into the skin and work its hydrating magic.

Time to tan with a hydrating formula

When it comes to dry skin, Gradualself tan lotions andhydrating foams are your best friends. Any of our self tanning lotions are a great choice, as the emollient formula helps provide moisture while delivering a bronzed glow.

Our pick is theDark Self Tanning Foam. Enriched with aloe vera and infused with a scent of coconut, this lightweight self tanning foam will leave your skin glowing like a day on Bondi beach.

Gradual tanning products, like theTinted Skin Perfector Gradual Tanning Lotion, can also be an excellent option if you prefer to build your glow slowly while keeping skin feeling hydrated.

Tanning Tip: Continue to moisturise after tanning

Once your tan has fully developed and you've rinsed off the guide colour, don’t forget about hydration. For dry skin, consistent hydration is one of the easiest ways to keep your glow looking fresh.

Moisturising daily helps extend the life of your tan and supports even fading. Look for a moisturiser that feels comfortable and nourishing. Apply regularly to keep your skin feeling soft, plump and balanced.

Extend your radiant glow for longer

To keep your glow going and maintain your tan, we recommend using a gradual tanning lotion. OurGradual Self Tanning Milk is a great gradual self tan for dry skin, as it’s made with skin-loving ingredients to soothe and hydrate.

Last but not least, make sure you moisturise regularly. Not only will it keep your skin hydrated and soft, but it’ll also prolong your tan so you can stay looking sun-kissed for longer.
