The Bondi Sands Guide To Self Tanning For Beginners
The three keys to perfect self tanning
Before we dig into the nitty-gritty, the perfect self tan starts with these:
-
Preparation
-
A bit of patience
-
Choosing the right product for your needs
Step 1: Start with prep (it makesall the difference)
Dry, flaky skin is a tan’s worst enemy, and we guarantee it’ll result in patchy, uneven streaks. The secret to an even tan? Smooth, exfoliated skin.
Exfoliating your skin 24 hours before tanning is key. It removes dead skin cells that can cause your tan to cling unevenly. When exfoliating, focus on areas where skin tends to be drier, which are usually the elbows, knees, ankles and wrists.
Crank up the heat in the shower to open up your pores and use anexfoliating mitt to begin the exfoliating ritual. While in the shower, use the black side and massage skin in a vertical direction, applying just enough pressure to slough off any flaky, dead skin.
Once your skin feels smooth enough and you’re ready to get out of the shower, change the shower’s temperature to cold. This will close your pores and prevent those pesky dark spots.
Tanning Tip
If you shave or wax, we recommend doing it at least 24 hours before tanning. This gives your skin time to settle, helps avoid irritation during the tanning process and stops your self tanner from seeping into your pores. But if you’re pushed for time, try and wait at least an hour before applying your tan.
Step 2: Apply moisturiser to keep skin smooth and healthy
Freshly exfoliated skin has the potential to dry out if not properly hydrated afterwards. To prevent this from happening, apply your favourite moisturiser as soon as you pop out of the shower. Any will do, even a face moisturiser. We personally love using ourDaydream Whipped Moisturiser for this. While it’s mainly meant for the face and neck, it can also be used on the body to provide up to 72 hours of deep hydration.
If you’ve left it a little late (we’ve all been there!) and you’re exfoliating the same day as you tan, only apply moisturiser to certain places. Your hands, wrists, feet, elbows and knees to be exact. This helps to prevent your self tan from clinging to these areas for a flawless finish.
Step 3: Choose the right self tan for you
If you’re new to self tanning, you might be thinking there’s only one type of self tan. In reality, different formulas work for different needs. Here’s the lowdown:
Foams are popular with first-timers because they're lightweight, fast-drying and easy to spread. Perfect if you want control and an even finish.
Lotions and creams are more hydrating, which makes them ideal for drier skin or if you prefer a slower, more nourishing application.
Gradual tanners are brilliant if you're after a subtle glow or want to build colour over time. They're forgiving, low-commitment, and super easy to maintain.
Ultra Express tanners are the best for when you need a golden glow in record time (a.k.a in just one hour). Meanwhile, instant tanners are great if you’re looking to get bronzed skin that’s a mixture between self tan and makeup.
For beginners, we strongly recommend our bestsellingDark Self Tanning Foam. Not only have we designed it for first-timers, but it’s also enriched with aloe vera and infused with a coconut scent to leave your skin glowing.

Step 4: Apply your chosen self tan product evenly
On application day, make sure your skin is clean, dry, and free from moisturiser, deodorant or perfume. These can create barriers and mess with how your tan develops.
Now when it comes to application, remember: less pressure, more intention.
What we mean by that is, firstly, apply a small amount of product to your Application Mitt. Work the product in long, sweeping motions, intentionally focusing on one section at a time. Use comfortable pressure - pressing harder on your skin won’t make the tanning product sink any deeper.
Start with larger areas like your legs, arms and torso. Then move to smaller areas. Use whatever's left on the mitt for hands, feet, elbows and knees. These spots absorb colour faster, so a lighter touch keeps things natural.
Once the tan is all buffed in, you can lightly retouch areas to prevent patches and streaks.
Step 5: Sit back and relax (patience is key)
This is the fun part: do nothing! Most self tans need a few hours to fully develop. During this time, avoid sweating, swimming or getting your skin wet. Instead, enjoy a coffee, grab a good book and relax as you let the product work its magic.
Let it dry completely before putting on some loose, dark clothing to prevent your tan from transferring.
As for the best time to apply a self tan, we suggest either applying it in the morning for daytime development, or before you go to bed to wake up looking bronzed and beautiful.
Either way, your glow will continue to settle over the next 24 hours, revealing a more even, natural finish.
How to maintain your glow
Keeping your tan looking fresh is all about hydration.
Moisturise daily to help prevent patchy fading and dryness. When it's time to reapply, gently exfoliate to remove any leftover colour before starting again.
Gradual tanners like ourGradual Self Tanning Milk are also a great way to top up colour between full applications without overdoing it. The unique formula is made with skin-loving ingredients, giving your tan a glow-up while hydrating your skin for a natural finish.
